I thought I would do a more "tasteful" Christmas card this year.

HitRECord post
It's been a weird couple of weeks. Had some ups and downs, but I will only tell you about the ups.
One big highlight was the fact that after saving for a couple of years now, I finally got a Cintiq! Good old Wacom, I finally got the money for a 21" screen, then I heard that they were to bring out a 24"- Son of a bitch! I carried on saving.
It arrived, and it was a LOT bigger than I was expecting. And after getting used to it, sorting the shortcuts and attempting to mimic the colour levels of my Mac, I'm very happy with it. It makes sketching SO much quicker and precise (I previously had the smallest Intuos).
I was happily finishing a drawing (the Manager character design) on a Sunday night when my girlfriend informed me of a character design challenge on HitRECord, an open collaborative production company run by Joseph Gordon Levitt. As I was finishing up one image, and I wasn't tired yet, I thought I would give it a go., especially as it gave me an excuse to play with the Cintiq for longer.
The brief was a character design of a man with a turnip for a head. It is to be animated over a poem read by Gary Oldman. The are more details of the brief on the website.
Anyway, here is my submission.

After uploading it I went to bed. he next day, I see that it has loads of hits and even a comment from Joseph Gordon Levitt himself. That made my day. It also made it onto the "Featured" page!
If the design gets picked, then a group of talented animators from hitRECord with animate my character design over the poem read by Gary Oldman.
I cannot even begin to imagine working on a project that has Mr. Oldman's name on it. The closest I have gotten to this before is by watching Leon with my nose pressed to the screen whilst swallowing Tic Tacs in the way that his character in Leon swallows his pills.
Anyway, if you want to see the post, follow this link. You will also be helping me out by adding another hit to the hit count!
Cheers guys.

Managers
Managers. The guys at the top of their game getting shit done. Excel? Pfft, please- they invented spreadsheets. Think you're having troubles with your modern computer programme? You pussy- they were killing it back in the day on the first ever edition of that software.
Let me forward you on a memo so we can touch base.

Not m'chips mush!
This is my latest piece. This is a typical sunny day in Portsmouth. Thought I would chuck in the rough version of it too. I enjoyed playing around with the lighting in this one. What do you think?

Ninja Training
Near Denmead (Portsmouth) there is an assault course in the woods. Me and some mates try to go there once a week to at least TRY and work of these pleasantly bulbous beer guts. It takes a while to blitz it over there on the bike. We have called this activity Ninja Training. Though beer usually follows this exercise too.
Didn't get around to starting a new piece for the portfolio (also due to I cant think of what to draw), so I drew a ninja fighting greyhound because one of the fellow ninjas, and good friend, is affectionately known as The Greyhound. He would probably hate this drawing. Sorry.

BROWN EYE
I used to work with an Australian guy called Tim. He used to hop in my car to grab a lift to work. We would always talk about random crap that made us cry with laughter. One of the conversations was about super heroes. With all the great superheroes that were born with awesome powers, we wondered why there are never any comic books about heroes who got the short end of the stick when it comes to powers. One example would be if a person's only power was to turn into a rhinoceros every time they ejaculate (courtesy of Ben Pawsey). Anyway, one idea for a superhero's unfortunate ability would be for them to defecate out of their eyes, instead of their anus. I almost crashed the car I was laughing so hard. We spent ages in traffic laughing about the ins and outs of owning this power.
Anyway, today is Tim's birthday. He moved back to Australia a couple of years back so I can't drown him in beer. So this is for you Tim. Happy Birthday!

Well she's gotta have big tits......and get me beer.
A friend of mine posted this video on Facebook. It is a dating video compilation from the 80's.

It made me laugh, and seeing that I LOVE drawing hideous people I thought I would draw a couple of them as a warm up. However, I ended up drawing all of them because I was having such a great time.

Mandate for a Man Date.
Thanks to a new Studio that opened up in Portsmouth (Bonzo Studio), I thought I would have another go at screen printing. I did a class a while back and printed a quick, hand drawn image (Man Date). I re-did the art work for it so I could pull off some better prints. Maaaaaybe even some T-shirts.
I also did another design that I thought would be fun to do. It is a spin-off of a great "dad joke".
I will put up the pictures of the prints when I get round to doing them!

My Primary School Headmaster
Derry Lewis has just retired from his position as headmaster from Danesfield Primary School in Medmenham. My mum used to be a staff member of the school, and was invited along to the shin dig. I did this as a present for him.
By the way, he used to say "Marvellous" a lot.

Bromance.
When I was in San Francisco, I went to my first screen printing class!
I had always been interested in the process, but had no idea of how it worked. I found the class fascinating. I just wish I had more time- I drew an image straight onto acetate and only had time to print a few copies.
Thank you to the helpful instructor at the Mission Cultural Centre for Latino Arts for providing all the help and materials, and to Jenn for organising the geek out session.
